WINNER: "Therme vals" by 3D Capacity

Many techniques combined into an excellent visualization

The winner of this year is an excellent architectural presentation. The creators of this application told us they chose this model because it offers so many opportunities to show excellent 3D technology.

The pools in the building are beautifully rendered using specialized shaders for refraction. ripple effects and reflection. Custom shaders are used for sky color and synthetic clouds. The surroundings of the building are also created using custom shaders for grass and tree rendering for example.

The  design of the building is very special because it has several small slits where small bands of light can enter the building. To capture this effect  3D Capacity used a custom lighting technique combining several pre-rendered radiosity solutions with a real-time shadow system. Stencil shadows are used to create accurate shadow edges. They replaced the already excellent HDR and tone mapping filters in Quest3D and created their own to allow even more control over the final images.

"The Therme Vals application is the first Virtual Scale Model to use the new Virtual Scale Model 2.0 framework. Apart from numerous new technical features, this framework offers a new user friendly interface and the possibility to use a Xbox 360™ or SpaceNavigator™ controller for navigating the Virtual Scale Model."

Second place: "The Path" by Tale of tales

A scary horror game with unique style and atmosphere

The Path

When you start the game you immediately notice this game is different. Your first instruction is "Stay on the path" and visit your grandmother. If you do so the game ends and you start over. What could be the intention behind this game? This game offers an experience no other game can so this alone makes it deserves a spot in our Quest3D awards.

Honorable mention 1: "Aqua jelly" by 3D-Scapes

Very good all-round presentation of biomechanical jellyfish

Aquajelly

This application combines real-time 3D with real life footage and images to create a powerful presentation. A photo bubble is used to simulate the ocean floor and the jellyfish uses advanced animation techniques to animate its tentacles.

Honorable mention 2: "Nail art designer" by Voxcell Design

Design your own nails!

Nail art studio

This simple application allows the user to design nails using various types of nail polish in combination with patterns and gems. The application makes excellent use of shaders to display various types of gems and finishes.

Honorable mention 3: "Temple 2" by Ali Rahimi Shahamirzadi

The depth of field effect gives it a film-like look.

Nail art studio

This presentation uses a combination of graphics techniques to achieve high quality images. Depth of field is used to enhance the depth of the image and HDR light maps are used to create realistic lighting. The menu also allows the user to overlay a sketch effect.
